The Right Stuff
We've made the conscious decision to shift our focus away from exclusively hiring college graduates. This approach stems from our understanding that a traditional college education, while valuable, is not the only path to developing exceptional skills and qualities in engineering.
We've observed that individuals who have bypassed the traditional college route often exhibit an ease of collaboration and adaptability in the workplace. These candidates have frequently navigated diverse experiences, from self-taught programming to hands-on work experience, which instills in them a prepared mindset and a readiness to integrate into different work environments. Their journey has often required them to be self-starters, capable of learning and evolving without the structured environment of a classroom. This makes them uniquely equipped to work in the dynamic, often unpredictable world of tech startups, where agility and a collaborative spirit are key.
Stepping outside the conventional path of college fosters a more free-thinking approach. These individuals are not constrained by the formalities and specific thought processes that are sometimes ingrained through traditional education. This freedom allows for more creativity and innovation, qualities that are invaluable in engineering. They're accustomed to exploring unconventional solutions and are not afraid to challenge the status quo, which can lead to breakthroughs and advancements in process.
There is a notable difference in the level of tolerance and acceptance among those who have taken a less traditional path.
Exposure to a variety of environments and challenges, as opposed to the more homogenous setting of a college, often breeds a greater appreciation and understanding of diverse perspectives. This diversity of thought and experience contributes to a more inclusive and productive work environment. In the world of technology, where global collaboration is the norm, having a team that is inherently more accepting and adaptable to different cultures and ideas is a significant advantage.
While a college degree can be a valuable asset, it is not the sole indicator of potential or capability in the field of engineering. By valuing diverse experiences and perspectives, we open our doors to a wider range of talent, driving innovation and fostering a more dynamic, inclusive workplace.
What we seek
- Real-World Experience: We prioritize candidates who have demonstrated their skills in real-worlQd scenarios. This includes hands-on experience with projects, either independently or in previous roles, that show their ability to apply their knowledge practically. Whether it's through developing their own software, contributing to open-source projects, or problem-solving in a non-academic setting, we value the insights and skills gained outside of a traditional classroom environment.
- Technical Ability: A strong foundation in technical skills is essential. We look for candidates who have a deep understanding of programming languages relevant to our work, as well as experience with software development tools and methodologies. This can come from a variety of sources, not just formal education. We assess technical ability through practical tests, project portfolios, and problem-solving scenarios during the interview process.
- Excellent Written and Verbal Communication: The ability to communicate effectively is crucial in our collaborative environment. We seek individuals who can articulate their ideas clearly and concisely, both in writing and verbally. This includes the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical team members, collaborate across teams, and contribute constructively to discussions. Communication skills are often honed through diverse experiences, including team projects, community involvement, or even blogging about technical topics.
- Always a student: This is a mindset we highly value. It's about having an insatiable curiosity and a continuous drive to learn and grow. In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, staying stagnant is not an option. We seek individuals who are constantly updating their skills, open to new ideas, and adaptable to change. This quality ensures our team remains innovative and prepared to tackle future challenges.
